Rapid Read The site of Air India plane crash in Gujarat's Ahmedabad (Photo: PTI) As her husband and daughter boarded the ill-fated Air India flight a year ago, Mobbashera Vahora could never have imagined that her world would collapse within moments. Air India Flight 171, bound for London from Ahmedabad, crashed shortly after take-off in what remains one of India’s worst aviation disasters in recent years.
On board were her husband, Parvez Vahora, and their four-year-old daughter, Zuveriya, travelling back to London after visiting family in India. The crash claimed both their lives almost immediately, leaving behind a family shattered and struggling to comprehend the loss. Back in London, Mobbashera was left alone to endure an unimaginable void. Unable to remain in the UK in the aftermath, she later returned to her ancestral home in Tarapur, Maharashtra, surrounded by relatives trying to help her cope with the tragedy. At the time of the crash, she was pregnant. After returning to India, she gave birth to a baby boy—a moment filled with both hope and heartbreak, as the child will grow up without ever knowing his father and sister.
“There was no way she could have stayed there alone," Faruk Bhai, her relative, told NDTV, recalling how the family brought her back to Tarapur to be surrounded by loved ones. “She was pregnant and was in London when this tragedy unfolded. She lost everything. The family decided that she should move back," he added. Their story is only one among hundreds of families devastated by the AI-171 disaster. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also among those killed in the crash. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national, was the sole survivor, walking out of the wreckage injured even as 241 others lost their lives, including his own brother. A total of 260 people died in the crash. One year on, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau continues its probe, while Air India has stated that interim compensation has been paid to 96 per cent of families of those on board.
