West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has ordered an investigation into an agency reportedly close to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, with the matter being described as a major “ scam" now under the scanner. According to the allegations, the Kolkata-based agency is believed to have received around Rs 635 crore over the last few years.
The amount was allegedly credited into three bank accounts linked to the agency. Authorities are probing 20 transactions that together account for the alleged Rs 635 crore. The Chief Minister is of the view that the matter amounts to the “looting of public money" and has ordered a probe into the transactions. The case may also be handed over to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for investigation into suspected money laundering. In the Assembly, more than two-thirds of the party’s MLAs, 58 of its 80 legislators, broke away from the official TMC legislature party and secured recognition as the principal opposition bloc under expelled legislator Ritabrata Banerjee. The rebel faction has since claimed that its numbers have increased further. The unrest has also spilt over to Parliament, where a group of rebel MPs led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has claimed the backing of more than 20 Lok Sabha members.
