‘No One Should Cross Limits’: Fadnavis Weighs In Over Debate On Rs 370 Biryani Row Published By, Last Updated: June 12, 2026, 13:55 IST The video went viral, drawing sharp condemnation from women’s rights groups and social media users. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis. Rs 370 Biryani Row: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday weighed in on the ongoing row over “Rs 370 Biryani" comment in stand-up comedian Pranit More’s show, saying freedom of expression is a constitutional right but warning that nobody should cross the limits of decency and dignity. While addressing the row, Fadnavis said that he enjoys stand-up comedy and follows comedians, but stressed that freedom of speech has boundaries. “The Constitution has given the right to freedom of expression. I follow stand-up comedians; it’s entertaining. But everyone should know the limitation. I expect that no one should cross their limits," he said.
The chief minister also condemned content that is misogynistic or abusive, stating that freedom of speech ends when it encroaches upon the freedom and dignity of others. What’s The Row? The controversy erupted after a clip from comedian Pranit More’s stand-up show went viral online. In the video, Himanshu Jangra, a web developer by profession, narrated an anecdote at the show about spending Rs 370 on a plate of chicken biryani on a date. He then said he sought sexual favours from the woman in exchange for the money spent – a remark that drew laughter from the audience and from More, who was hosting the event. The video went viral, drawing sharp condemnation from women’s rights groups and social media users. Following the backlash, Maharashtra Cyber registered a case against More, Jangra, Dr Sejal Pawar and others for allegedly publishing obscene and objectionable content online.
Authorities said the remarks trivialised consent and portrayed women in a derogatory manner. Officials said another viral clip from the same show contained allegedly disrespectful comments about deceased persons and medical cadavers, prompting further scrutiny. Summons have been issued to More, Jangra and Pawar to appear before Maharashtra Cyber and record their statements. The Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo motu cognisance of the matter. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has summoned More and Jangra and sought a report from the Haryana Director General of Police within seven days. Both Jangra and More subsequently apologised, with More also deactivating his Instagram account. A Gurugram firm fired Jangra over the remarks. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Cyber has issued an advisory urging content creators and social media users to comply with legal provisions and warned against sharing or circulating obscene material online.
