UP Elections: AIMIM Eyes Contesting 200 Seats; Owaisi To Launch Poll Campaign From Bahraich Published By, Edited By Last Updated: June 12, 2026, 12:42 IST AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi will launch the 2027 Uttar Pradesh poll campaign from Bahraich on June 14. (File photo) The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is gearing up for an aggressive campaign ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, with party chief Asaduddin Owaisi set to launch the party’s poll outreach from Bahraich on June 14. The public meeting in Bahraich will mark AIMIM’s formal entry into the state’s election campaign and is being seen as an attempt by the Hyderabad-based party to expand its footprint in Uttar Pradesh, particularly in regions with significant minority populations.
According to a report by Times Of India, Owaisi will address a rally in the Matera Assembly constituency of Bahraich district during his visit. He is also expected to offer prayers at the Dargah of Syed Salar Masood Ghazi, a prominent religious site in the region. AIMIM Eyes Contesting 200 Seats In UP Elections 2027 AIMIM’s Uttar Pradesh president Shaukat Ali said the party is preparing to contest around 200 Assembly seats if it decides to go solo in the elections. He indicated that while the party remains open to alliances, any potential tie-up would likely be with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). “Our natural alliance, if we were to forge one, would be with the BSP," Shaukat Ali was quoted as saying, arguing that a combination of Dalit and Muslim votes could significantly alter the state’s electoral dynamics.
Threat To Samajwadi Party The choice of Bahraich as the starting point of AIMIM’s campaign is politically significant. The Matera constituency has traditionally been considered a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party (SP), making Owaisi’s visit a direct challenge to the opposition party’s influence among Muslim voters in eastern Uttar Pradesh. AIMIM leaders have repeatedly accused the SP of taking Muslim support for granted while failing to deliver adequate development in minority-dominated areas. The SP, on the other hand, has often alleged that AIMIM’s presence in elections could split opposition votes.
