'Whatever He Earned...': Family Of UP Sailor Killed In Red Sea Attack Makes Emotional Appeal Reported By, Last Updated: June 12, 2026, 10:35 IST 28-year-old Shivanand Chaurasia was among the crew members killed when the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier MV Eternity C came under attack in the Red Sea Rapid Read Employed by a Singapore-based shipping company, Shivanand had taken up the job to support his parents, wife and two young children. For Ram Ji Chourasia, the news was devastating. The Deoria resident never imagined that his only son, who had gone abroad to work on a merchant vessel, would lose his life in an attack in the Red Sea. “Our only wish now is that his mortal remains are brought back home so that we can perform his last rites," Ram Ji Chaurasia, father of 28-year-old Shivanand Chaurasia, told News18. Shivanand, a resident of Surauli village in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district, was among the crew members killed when the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier MV Eternity C came under attack in the Red Sea. Employed by a Singapore-based shipping company, Shivanand had taken up the job to support his parents, wife and two young children.
The family received the news of his death on Wednesday, leaving relatives in shock and mourning. According to family members, Shivanand had spoken to them just a few days before the incident and assured them that everything was fine. “He had left home to support us. Whatever he earned, he sent back home. He was our only hope," a relative said as neighbours and villagers gathered at the family’s residence to offer condolences. The attack on MV Eternity C is part of a series of assaults on commercial vessels in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. International media reports said the vessel was targeted while transiting one of the world’s busiest shipping routes. Shivanand was among the three Indian sailors reported killed in the incident. For the family in Surauli village, however, the larger geopolitical conflict is secondary to their grief. “Our son is gone. We appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government to help bring his body back so that we can perform his last rites," Ram Ji Chaurasia said. Villagers described Shivanand as a hardworking young man who chose a career at sea to improve his family’s financial condition.
His journey had inspired several youngsters in the area to seek employment opportunities outside the village. #WATCH | Deoria, UP | Devastated family members mourn the loss of their beloved Shivanand Chaurasia, who was working as an engine fitter on the ill-fated oil tanker MT Settebello, which was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz on June 10.Shivanand Chaurasia, a resident of Surauli… pic.twitter.com/xEY15GUOyJ — ANI UP/Uttarakhand (@ANINewsUP) June 12, 2026 Shivanand got married a few years ago and had started a family. Despite concerns over his long periods away from home, his parents supported his decision because the job offered financial stability. “We never wanted him to stay away from home for so long, but he had responsibilities towards the family," his father said. Local administration officials have assured the family that efforts are underway to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs and the shipping company for the repatriation of the body. Villagers and local leaders have also urged the government to extend all possible assistance to the bereaved family. As relatives continue to arrive at the Chaurasia household, the atmosphere remains one of disbelief.
