(Source: X) The Trinamool Congress has been drawn into a fresh political controversy after rebel MP Kakoli Ghosh wrote to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, flagging reported allegations of extremist links involving former TMC Rajya Sabha MP Ahmed Hassan Imran. In her letter, Ghosh referred to media reports and public allegations claiming that Imran may have had associations with certain extremist organisations operating in Bangladesh, and raised concerns over the matter. “It has been reported that Imran, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha with the support of the former Government of West Bengal, has allegedly had associations with certain extremist organisations operating in Bangladesh," Ghosh said.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the alleged non-allotment of land requested by the Indian Army and the Border Security Force (BSF) in certain strategically sensitive areas along the international border of West Bengal, including the Siliguri Corridor (“Chicken’s Neck") region. The circumstances surrounding these decisions deserve careful scrutiny from the standpoint of national security," she added. Who Is TMC MP Imran? Ahmed Hassan Imran, a former journalist and a founding member of the West Bengal chapter of SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India), served as a Trinamool Congress member of the Rajya Sabha from 2014 to 2020. He has previously come under the scrutiny of intelligence agencies over alleged links to extremist groups in Bangladesh, as well as his past association with and leadership role in SIMI.
SIMI was later banned by the Indian government. After SIMI’s ban, many of its members went on to form the Popular Front of India (PFI), which was also subsequently outlawed. In a post last year, BJP leader Amit Malviya had said, “According to intelligence reports, Ahmed Hassan Imran made frequent visits to Bangladesh after 1977, where he reportedly maintained contact with JMB (Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh) terrorists. In 2001, he attended a seminar on Islamic philosophy organised by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) in Howrah. During the event, the son of notorious JMB leader Golam Azam declared that Islam is superior to any nation-state. A year earlier, Imran’s magazine Kalom had hosted another seminar, which was attended by Jamaat operatives Abul Kasem Ali and Abu Jafar."
