What nobody expected was for the city to look like it had stepped straight out of Gotham before the championship had even been won. 🚨🏀 NEW YORK — GAME 4 CHAOSKnicks beat Spurs 107–106 in a historic 29-point comeback, the biggest in #NBAFinals history Celebrations outside Madison Square Garden turned chaotic, with crowds, clashes, arrests, and heavy police response reported#NewYork Just hours after the Knicks stunned the San Antonio Spurs with a remarkable 29-point comeback victory at Madison Square Garden, celebrations across Manhattan spiraled into chaos, leaving dozens under arrest and multiple police officers injured. According to the New York Police Department, 56 people were taken into custody following widespread disorder around Madison Square Garden late Wednesday night.
Ten officers were injured during the unrest, including one who was struck in the head by a glass bottle. Authorities confirmed that charges include assaulting a police officer, disorderly conduct and possession of a knife. A Night of Celebration Turns Ugly The Knicks’ dramatic 107-106 victory had already secured a place in NBA history, moving New York within one win of its first championship since 1973. But as thousands of fans flooded the streets around Madison Square Garden, the celebrations quickly got out of hand. Videos shared on social media showed fans climbing onto moving vehicles, attempting to flip over a taxi and launching fireworks into packed crowds. An AFP photographer on the scene reported seeing law enforcement deploy stun grenades in an effort to disperse large groups near the arena. “Once again, there were large crowds of people who engaged in incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior last night both during and after the game," the NYPD said in a statement.
Spurs Players Also Targeted The chaos wasn’t limited to the streets. As the Spurs returned to their Manhattan hotel, several hostile Knicks supporters gathered outside to heckle players and staff. Video footage showed fans directing abuse toward San Antonio star Victor Wembanyama, with at least one egg reportedly thrown in the direction of the French phenom. Tensions Continue to Rise Authorities had already been on high alert. Following unrest during Game 3, attended by U.S. President Donald Trump, police arrested 21 people and reported four injured officers. Concerns over further disturbances prompted officials to ban planned public watch parties near Madison Square Garden ahead of Game 4. Now, with the Knicks holding a commanding 3-1 lead in the Finals and sitting just one victory away from ending a 53-year title drought, officials will be hoping celebrations remain under control.
Because if this is what New York looks like before winning the championship, the city may need to brace itself for something even bigger if the Knicks finish the job.
