According to environmental reports, the glacier has lost 95 percent of its surface area and has nearly vanished. The melting is attributed to global warming, reduced snowfall, and a massive human footprint. Despite a High Court ban on vehicular traffic, unregulated tourism continues to damage the eco-fragile zone.
Thousands of tourists and horses visit the area daily without any regulatory limits, leading to significant garbage pollution, heat generation, and microplastic contamination. The glacier is a critical water source that feeds the Sindh River, and its depletion poses a severe threat to the region's water resources and ecological balance. The report emphasizes the urgent need for government intervention to establish regulatory norms, limit tourist numbers, and implement conservation measures recommended by environmental bodies to save the remaining five percent of the glacier.
