The Government of India has intensified monitoring and coordination efforts in the Gulf region after a missile attack on a merchant vessel claimed the lives of three Indian seafarers. The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Indian maritime interests and personnel operating in conflict-affected waters. Authorities have directed all maritime stakeholders to remain on heightened alert and strictly adhere to security protocols while operating in conflict-prone waters. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) is monitoring developments in the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman, and adjoining maritime areas through the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).
The MT Settebello, a Palau-flagged medium-range tanker, carrying 28 crew, including 24 Indians, was reportedly hit by a missile on June 10 about 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar, Oman. According to Oman’s Maritime Security Centre and the vessel’s management, three Indian seafarers lost their lives in the attack, while the remaining crew members were rescued safely. Govt. coordinating with owners Following the incident, Indian authorities are now coordinating with ship owners, recruitment agencies, foreign maritime administrations, the Indian Navy, and diplomatic missions to facilitate rescue operations and provide assistance to the affected crew.
Officials said the mortal remains of the deceased seafarers have been located and identified, and efforts are underway to expedite their repatriation along with the rescued crew members. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, expressed grief over the tragedy and said the government was fully committed to the safety and welfare of Indian seafarers. “The safety of Indian citizens, protection of Indian maritime interests and uninterrupted movement of legitimate cargo remain our highest priorities,” Mr. Sonowal said. The Seafarers Welfare Fund Society (SWFS) has announced financial assistance of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased seafarers.
Authorities said round-the-clock emergency response mechanisms remain operational, while the Directorate General of Shipping continues to coordinate with the next of kin and all relevant agencies to ensure timely support and assistance.
