Firefighters were investigating a âhazardous â materials incident at the Pentagon on Thursday (June 11, 2026), â Arlington â County fire and ârescue officials said in a post on âX. The building was â under lockdown with people evacuated from several floors, CNN âreported, citing â unidentified sources.
It said emergency responders were wearing full gas âmasks and chemical protection suits. âThe Pentagon has sophisticated systems to ensure the safety of the building and its occupants. Those systems have âdetected an air quality issue necessitating precautionary measures â until we determine its significance,â Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in an email.
âThe Department is executing standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the affected area. Response teams are in place and ready to support building occupants.â Floors two through five âwere locked down, as well as some corridors, CNN â reported.
The five-sided Pentagon building is one of the worldâs largest office buildings.
