Panic gripped residents =Punkunnam after 18 python hatchlings were found in a house compound over two days, raising fears of more snakes in the area. The hatchlings were recovered from the premises of a house on Seetharam Lane. The incident first came to light when house owner Karthik’s brother spotted two snake hatchlings near the canal adjoining the house.
More hatchlings were found across the compound later in the day. Around eight were caught on the first day, with two slipping into the water. A fresh search on Thursday morning led to the capture of 10 more hatchlings, including some found inside a scooter parked in front of the house. The hatchlings, each around 50 cm long, were handed over to forest officials.
As per the preliminary assessment by the Forest department a python may have entered from the nearby canal, laid eggs in or around the house foundation, and the hatchlings might have emerged recently. Fearing that more snakes could be hiding on the premises, the family, in coordination with forest officials, is preparing to break open parts of the compound wall for further inspection.
The discovery has triggered anxiety among residents, especially as children and elderly members live in the house. Officials said the rescued hatchlings will be released into forest.
