Chairman of Karnataka State Safai Karmacharis Commission P. Raghu has asked the authorities to take steps to provide basic facilities, including ESI, PF, health insurance, to sanitation workers. He was chairing a progress review meeting after holding an interaction with sanitation workers and civic workers working in urban local bodies, gram panchayats in Dharwad on Thursday. Raghu said that while there are two toilets per zone, steps should be taken to construct one toilet in each ward.
Quality breakfast should be provided to civic workers and they should be provided with salary, ESI, PF, health insurance facilities from time to time. Compensation of โน10 lakh should be released to the family, if civic workers die while still in service, he said. He said that safety equipments should be distributed to civic workers and they should undergo health check-up every three months and a master health check-up once a year.
Pointing out that the commission has received several complaints, he directed the officials to immediately take steps to resolve the complaints related to salaries. Houses should be allotted to workers under housing schemes and salaries of outsourced employees should not be withheld, he said. He said that sanitation workers working in various departments should be given minimum wages. Raghu asked officials to ensure that outsourced employees working in Karnataka University are paid their salaries.
Awareness programs should be organized for workers about Provident Fund (PF) facility. He also stressed the need for sensitising workers about various schemes of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Development Corporation. Members of the commission Shankar and Mahadevaswamy, Deputy Commissioner Snehal R., Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Bhuvanesh Patil, Probationary IAS Officer Anupriya Sakya and Commissioner of Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation Commissioner Rudresh Ghali were present.
