Belagavi corporation official asked to submit report on complaints by Kannada organisations
Regional Commissioner K.M. Janaki has directed the Commissioner of Belagavi City Corporation to submit a report on complaints against the urban local body for delay
Regional Commissioner K.M. Janaki has directed the Commissioner of Belagavi City Corporation to submit a report on complaints against the urban local body for delay in passing a resolution saying Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka. Acting on two complaints from Kannada organisations, the Regional Commissioner issued orders directing City Corporation Commissioner Karthik M. to look into all the allegations and take suitable action before filing the report. The complainants, Balram Masenatti and Wajid Hirekodi, have said that the city corporation has failed to pass a one-line resolution saying that Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka and that the Mahajan Commission report is final and binding on all parties concerned.
Kannada organisations have been agitating for this since March but the city corporation has not taken any note of this. The city corporation has referred the issue to the Urban Development Department, though there is no need for it. By delaying the resolution, the city corporation has betrayed the sentiments of Kannadigas, while insulting the people of Belagavi, they said. The city corporation has also failed to withdraw or overrule its 2004 resolution saying Belagavi and other Marathi-speaking areas should be merged with Maharashtra, the Kannada organisations said in their complaints.
Meanwhile, MLA Asif (Raju) Sait has said that he will raise the issue in the next general body meeting of the city corporation. โMy father Nooruddin Sait fought for reunification of Kannada-speaking areas into Karnataka. I will demand that the city corporation take steps to pass the resolution,โ Mr. Sait told reporters in Belagavi on Wednesday. Convenor of the central committee of Kannada organisations Ashok Chandargi has urged the State government to intervene in the issue and ensure that the city corporation takes steps to pass the resolution.
โWe are not seeking supersession of the city corporation. Nothing will be achieved by that. We are only asking them to pass the resolution so that the record is set straight,โ Mr. Chandargi said. Minister Satish Jarkiholi said that he will speak to officials concerned and resolve the issue as soon as possible.
