A former high-ranking North Korean diplomat says leader Kim Jong Un sent his soldiers to fight in Ukraine to boost his country's nuclear technology. Tae Yong Ho served as North Korea’s deputy ambassador to the United Kingdom for a decade before defecting to South Korea in 2016 and becoming a member of parliament in 2020.
In an interview with 101 East correspondent Mary Ann Jolley, Tae says North Korea’s involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine has strengthened the country's modern warfare capabilities and advanced its nuclear ambitions.
He also offers insights into the implications on North Korea’s deployment for security of the Korean peninsula, and the perilous situation facing two North Korean prisoners of war held in Ukraine after their identities were exposed to the world.
