Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti has issued an order prohibiting the movement of heavy vehicles on the Agumbe Ghat (NH 169A) with effect from June 15 until the end of monsoon. The prohibition aims to prevent damage to the ghat during the rainy season. The decision follows an increase in heavy vehicle traffic on the stretch after Hulikal Ghat was closed for repairs following a landslide that claimed three lives in April this year.
In a communiqué from the district administration on June 11, the Deputy Commissioner noted that continued movement of heavy vehicles on the Agumbe Ghat could cause damage to the road surface, particularly during monsoon, disrupting traffic for commuters and those accessing hospitals in the coastal region. The Superintendent of Police had recommended the closure for heavy vehicles on these grounds.
Under the provisions of the Central Motor Vehicle Act and the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules, the Deputy Commissioner issued the order and suggested alternative routes. Those heading to
Udupi from Tirthahalli can take the Nagara-Nagodi-Kolluru-Udupi route or travel via Sringeri-Bajagoli-Karkala-Udupi. Similarly, those heading to Tirthahalli from Udupi may use the Kundapura-Kollur-Nagodi-Nagara route or go via Karkala-Bajagoli-Kerekatte-Sringeri.
