'Worry That Something Will Go Wrong': Anthropic CEO Raises Concerns Over AI Published By, Last Updated: June 11, 2026, 16:27 IST Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warns AI could go wrong, as a Reuters poll shows rising US job fears and companies like Intuit cut staff to boost AI efforts. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei (Image: AFP) Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei has raised fresh concerns about artificial intelligence, warning of its potential impact on society and the challenges it could pose in the years ahead. “I worry that something will go wrong," said Amodei in a Bloomberg documentary, adding, “Are we doing literally everything we can? We’re certainly trying our best." The remarks come amid a poll by Reuters stating that 53% of Americans fear that the rise of AI could put them or someone in their household out of work.
According to Reuters, the poll was done following a wave of AI-related job cuts by major companies including software firm Intuit, which told staff last month it would lay off 17% of its global workforce to streamline operations and sharpen focus on its key bets including its AI efforts. The Anthropic CEO, in the Bloomberg documentary, replied to a question on whether AI could be banned at some point, saying it is “possible". “The main way I could see AI being banned or blocked is if something really went wrong. And if something really went wrong, then maybe it deserves to be," he said. The former AI employee further said that “when you feel that you can’t trust someone, when you feel that their values are not what they say they are, when you feel that they are not honest, that makes it very hard to continue to work with a company, to continue to trust the company".
NDTV quoted Amodei saying in a policy essay, published on Wednesday, that governments should have the authority to block the deployment of the most advanced AI systems if independent evaluations find them to pose unacceptable risks. He pointed out that that voluntary transparency from AI companies is no longer enough because “the risks are clearly here". He further said that AI systems are needed to undergo mandatory independent testing before deployment, especially for high-impact risks such as cybersecurity vulnerabilities, biological misuse, and loss of human control.
