A 56-year-old government primary school teacher was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing several minor girls over a period of nearly one year. According to police, the accused, identified as Devanand Bera, worked at a government primary school in a village and had been teaching there for the past three years. Authorities said the teacher, who is physically disabled and nearing retirement, allegedly subjected schoolgirls to inappropriate physical contact and sexual abuse inside the school premises.

During this period, the accused allegedly took advantage of the young age and innocence of the girls and engaged in inappropriate physical contact with them. Investigators also alleged that some victims faced serious sexual abuse. The case came to light when one student informed her parents about the alleged “bad touch.” The parents subsequently spoke to other students and discovered that four more girls had allegedly faced similar abuse.
The revelations triggered outrage among parents and local residents. Following complaints from the victims’ families, parents approached Patanvav Police Station and demanded action against the teacher. Police registered a case and launched an investigation. Investigators have recorded statements of the victims and their parents. Authorities have also conducted medical examinations of the children and the accused. Preliminary findings revealed that the school did not have CCTV cameras, prompting police to gather additional evidence through other means.
Based on the complaint, Patanvav police registered a case against Devanand Bera under Sections 75(2), 351(2), 64(2) and 65(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 6, 8, 10 and 18 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police arrested the accused, while the Education Department suspended him after learning about the allegations. Ends
