In a shocking incident, a woman doctor allegedly died by suicide at her home in Punjab’s Jalandhar, with her family blaming her estranged husband of mental and physical assault. The deceased, identified as Dr Meenakshi Sood, a government doctor posted in Kapurthala, was found dead at her residence in Jalandhar on Wednesday morning. She was living separately from her husband, Dr Piyush. Police have registered a case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint by her father and have launched an investigation. According to police, officers reached the house in Kewal Vihar after receiving information through the control room.
The doors were reportedly locked from inside and police entered the house after breaking a glass panel in the presence of local residents. Meenakshi’s body was later found lying inside, as per news reports. Her family has accused her husband, Dr Piyush Sood, who runs a private eye hospital in Jalandhar, of subjecting her to years of mental and physical harassment. They also alleged that he had taken multiple loans in her name without her knowledge and was involved in an extramarital relationship with a woman employed at his hospital. According to Meenakshi’s father, Pramod Kumar, the couple married in October 2018. He claimed that a loan was taken in his daughter’s name to purchase a Thar SUV and that she continued paying the instalments from her salary. He further claimed that she recently discovered an additional loan of nearly Rs 2.5 crore allegedly linked to her name, causing her severe mental stress. The family said Meenakshi had been living separately from her husband since July 2025 due to marital disputes and was considering divorce proceedings.
Her parents also alleged that she had faced repeated physical abuse during the marriage. They claimed there had been earlier incidents of assault and that she had raised concerns about her husband’s alleged relationship with another woman. The family has submitted material, including CCTV footage they claim supports their allegations, to the police. Authorities have not commented on the authenticity of the footage, and the claims have not been independently verified. Police said the accused husband has not yet been questioned as his phone was switched off.
