The Calcutta High Court has directed Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee to appear before the CID at Bhabani Bhavan at 6:00 PM today in connection with the Bengal MLAs' forged signature row. The court stated that while Banerjee must cooperate with the investigating agency, no coercive action will be taken against him, allowing him to depart after questioning. The CID has been instructed to submit a status report, with the next hearing scheduled in two weeks.
The controversy stems from a letter sent by the TMC to the Speaker's office, nominating Sobhondev Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition, which allegedly contained forged signatures of several MLAs. Rebel MLAs Rittabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha filed a complaint regarding the forgery, which was made public by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The West Bengal government accused Banerjee of changing his stance in court regarding the dates the resolution was signed.
Banerjee is currently in New Delhi, and it remains to be seen if he will appear for questioning.
