A 55-year-old man was stranded for 20 hours in the no-man's land along the India-Bangladesh border. After a nearly 20-hour standoff over a 55-year-old man who was stranded in the no-man’s land, the tense situation along the India-Bangladesh border at Nandirchar in Mahendraganj, Meghalaya, ended as Bangladesh finally agreed to accept its citizen. According to the sources, Indian authorities made an attempt to hand over the man to Bangladesh after he was found allegedly entering India illegally.
However, personnel of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), along with residents from the border areas of Bangladesh, initially refused to accept him as their citizen. The country’s refusal to acknowledge and accept its own citizen led to prolonged tension along the international border.
Many have also criticised the treatment of the man, who belongs to the Hindu community, describing it as inhumane and irresponsible to leave him waiting at the border for nearly 20 hours before allowing him to return to his country. The development comes amid Assam’s intensified drive against undocumented Bangladeshi migrants. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly said that the state will pursue even stricter measures against illegal infiltration in 2026, with authorities continuing efforts to identify and deport foreign nationals residing in the country unlawfully.
