The government on Wednesday dismissed media reports claiming that Nepal has banned the Indian mangoes and suspended their imports. The government called the reports âfactually incorrect and misleading" and clarified that the exports have been continuing uninterrupted in the neighbouring country. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said that Nepalâs Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Centre had itself stated on June 10 that they have not imposed any ban on Indian mangoes.
ââŚcertain media reports have informed that Nepal has imposed a ban or suspension on the import of mangoes from India. These reports are factually incorrect and misleading," said the ministry in a statement. âImports continue to be permitted subject to prescribed phytosanitary requirements. Import permits and release orders are being issued upon compliance with these requirements," it added. 149 Consignments Of Mangoes Sent To Nepal In 2026 So Far According to the ministry, India has exported 149 consignments totalling 2,005 tonnes of mangoes to Nepal since January 2026. In the month of June, 18 consignments amounting to 266 tonnes have so far been shipped. Nepal has recently updated its import requirements, including the introduction of a Hot Water Treatment (HWT) protocol.
India said it is taking steps to facilitate exports in accordance with the revised norms. At the same time, New Delhi has raised concerns with Kathmandu over the implementation of new phytosanitary measures without prior consultation. It said the issue is being pursued through bilateral channels under the World Trade Organisationâs Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement and the framework of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). The ministry also advised traders and other stakeholders to rely only on official communications and disregard unverified reports regarding any alleged restrictions on mango exports to Nepal.
