While New Delhi and Washington share deep defence, economic and geopolitical ties, India has made it clear that the safety of its citizens remains a non-negotiable priority. What Happened Off The Coast Of Oman? The vessel at the centre of the controversy was the Palau-flagged commercial ship Settebello, which had 24 Indian crew members among its 28 personnel.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the ship came under attack while transiting waters off Oman. Twenty-one Indian crew members were rescued, but three remain missing. Search and rescue operations involving Omani authorities are continuing. The vessel was struck by the US military. The incident occurred against the backdrop of heightened tensions and military operations in the Gulf region between the US and Iran. In its official response, India condemned the attack on the commercial vessel and reiterated its longstanding position that civilian shipping and innocent crew members should never be endangered. It is more serious than a routine statement of concern but falls short of punitive measures such as sanctions, downgrading diplomatic ties or expelling diplomats. A demarche can take several forms like summoning a foreign diplomat, delivering a written protest, seeking explanations or accountability, and conveying official displeasure over an action. In this case, the Indian government summoned US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks and formally communicated its protest over the attack and the risks posed to Indian seafarers.
