The Karnataka government has removed approximately one lakh women from the beneficiary list of the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, which promises two thousand rupees monthly to female heads of households. The state government cited multiple discrepancies during a recent review, revealing that funds were being deposited into the accounts of deceased individuals and those paying income tax, which violates the eligibility criteria.
This streamlining effort is expected to save the state exchequer twenty-two crore rupees. Furthermore, the administration is considering the implementation of biometric verification for future disbursements. In response, the political opposition has strongly criticized the move, alleging that the cancellation process is unscientific and arbitrarily converts Below Poverty Line cards to Above Poverty Line status. The opposition claims this widespread cancellation not only halts the Gruha Lakshmi benefits but also deprives eligible citizens of essential healthcare support under the Ayushman Bharat scheme and stops various pension programs for the elderly, widows, and disabled individuals across the state.
