(AFP photo) US-Iran War: US President Donald tRump on Wednesday (loacl time) said that the United States wants a “meaningful" and “effective" deal with Iran, even as he signalled continued military pressure on Tehran amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region. While speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, the US President said that Washington was seeking an agreement that would prevent Iran from advancing its nuclear ambitions and ensure long-term regional stability. “We want a deal that’s meaningful. We want a deal that works," Trump said as quoted by news agency ANI, adding that Pakistan was continuing efforts to encourage Iran to engage constructively in negotiations. #WATCH | US President Donald Trump says, “We have the strongest military in the world.
And I gave them (Iran) a break at the request of Pakistan… We stopped them from going to war with India. You would have had a nuclear war if it weren’t for me. The US President, however, coupled his diplomatic outreach with fresh warnings for Iran, accusing its negotiators of delaying progress and cautioning that military action would continue if a deal remained out of reach. “We were really close to a deal, but they keep tapping us along. They keep playing us for suckers," Trump said. He also reiterated concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme, claiming that a nuclear-armed Iran would threaten Israel and destabilise the wider Gulf.
Trump said the United States had already carried out strikes against Iranian targets and indicated that further military operations could follow as negotiations remain uncertain. “We hit them hard yesterday. We’re going to hit them again hard today, and we’ll see what happens with the deal," he said. During his remarks, Trump again iterated his mediation efforts between India and Pakistan, saying that he played a decisive role in stopping a war between New Delhi and Islamabad and his intervention prevented what he described as a potential nuclear conflict between the two neighbouring countries. His remarks referred to the four-day military confrontation between India and Pakistan in May 2025 that followed New Delhi’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, which was launched in response to the April 22’s Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. India, however, has denied these claims. New Delhi has consistently maintained that the de-escalation followed established military communication channels between the two countries. According to India’s position, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations contacted the Indian DGMO after suffering heavy damage, following which both sides agreed to stop all firing and military action on land, in the air, and at sea with effect from May 10.
