Rapid Read Iran said shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will be halted. (Reuters/File Image) Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all maritime traffic following a new round of US military strikes, dramatically escalating tensions in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. In a statement posted on its official Telegram channel, the IRGC said the closure would take effect immediately and apply to all vessels, including oil tankers and commercial ships. “Effective immediately, due to insecurity in the region, the Strait of Hormuz is declared closed to all vessels, including oil tankers and commercial ships," the statement said, adding, “Any vessel attempting to transit the strait will be targeted." The announcement came after US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces had launched additional “self-defense strikes" against multiple targets in Iran, marking the latest escalation in the conflict between Washington and Tehran.
The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints. A significant portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports passes through the narrow waterway each day. Maritime traffic through the strait had already been severely disrupted by months of conflict. Since the outbreak of hostilities, Iran has repeatedly warned that vessels would require authorization from the IRGC to pass through the strategic corridor. Last month, Tehran introduced new regulations governing maritime transit through the waterway, further tightening its control over shipping movements. Iranian state media reported that several locations in Minab and Sirik, both situated near the Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran, were struck by what it described as enemy projectiles.
Meanwhile, the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) reported that air defence systems had been activated in Asaluyeh, a major energy hub on Iran’s southern coast. The broadcaster said no attack had been recorded on the city, which hosts key refineries, petrochemical facilities and gas infrastructure. Asaluyeh is considered one of the most important centres of Iran’s energy industry and plays a critical role in the country’s natural gas production and export capacity. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is likely to raise concerns across global energy markets and international shipping industries.
