The arrival of the monsoon in Mumbai and across Maharashtra has been delayed, with favorable conditions expected only after mid-June. While the monsoon reached the Indian mainland on June fourth and advanced up to Harnai on the West Coast, wind patterns have yet to align for further progress. Currently, only South Konkan districts like Ratnagiri have received heavy rainfall.
The delay exacerbates existing water shortages in Mumbai, which is already facing a ten percent water cut, as catchment areas in Thane and Nasik remain dry. Consequently, the Maharashtra government has advised farmers to halt seed sowing until the monsoon properly sets in. Additionally, the meteorological department forecasts rainfall at ninety percent of the long-term average, indicating slightly below-normal precipitation due to the El Niño effect.
The exact impact of El Niño will depend on its development over the season, leaving residents and farmers awaiting crucial rainfall for agricultural relief and temperature reduction.
