An India Today ground report reveals that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has missed the June 10 deadline for the Mithi River desilting project. Despite awarding a 30 crore rupee contract to two companies in April to remove 1.32 lakh metric tons of silt, the river remains choked with natural vegetation, debris, and mudslides. At the Bandra Kurla Complex and Kurla outfall areas, no BMC staff or heavy machinery were present to execute the cleaning work.
The retaining walls and water flow channels are obstructed, raising concerns about potential flooding in low-lying areas such as Kurla, Kalina, and Santa Cruz during the monsoon. A local Congress corporator highlighted that the administration reduced the desilting target from previous years, yet the required work remains incomplete. During the inspection, the reporter also confronted a contractor over the phone regarding the absence of labourers and excavators at the site.
The incomplete desilting work leaves Mumbai vulnerable to waterlogging, reminiscent of the 2005 floods.
