ADILABAD The strength of the specialised anti-naxal wings — The Greyhounds and the SIB — will be scaled down in view of the almost complete eradication of naxalism, to utilise their services in new specialised wings to meet the emerging needs as part of modern policing, said Director General of Police C.V. Anand. Addressing the media in Adilabad on Wednesday, the DGP said, “The Maoist movement is nearly extinct. Almost all top leaders of the banned CPI (Maoist), including its Central Committee members, either surrendered or got killed in several encounters.” The sustained efforts of the anti-naxal forces coupled with tough measures by the Centre resulted in almost extinction of naxalism, he added.
The DGP said, “While Telangana had successfully overcome the challenge of Left Wing Extremism, the State is now facing new threats in the form of cybercrimes, drug abuse and road accidents. The Telangana police is moving forward in a new direction of modern policing to combat drug menace and cybercrimes, besides preventing road accidents and ensuring better traffic management, the DGP said. Referring to the cases of drug abuse among students, he said, “It is the collective responsibility of society to combat drug menace. All stakeholders including the managements of schools and colleges should work collectively to curb drug abuse, he emphasised.
The government is going to bring a GO soon to constitute anti-drug committees in all educational institutions, he noted. The DGP appreciated the efforts of the police in curbing ganja (cannabis) cultivation and vigorously implementing road safety awareness programmes in the combined Adilabad district. He emphasised the need for expanding the technology-driven policing initiatives including use of drones to curb cultivation ganja (cannabis). Earlier in the day, the DGP inaugurated the integrated CCTV Monitoring System at the Command-and-Control Centre in Adilabad town. He also inaugurated a Traffic Training Institute, a Children’s Park and Traffic signals in Adilabad.
At a road safety awareness programme held as part of “Arrive Alive” campaign in Tosham village in Gudihathnoor mandal, the DGP handed over helmets, first-aid kits, and learner’s driving licences to tribal youth. The DGP conducted a crime review meeting at the District Police Headquarters in Adilabad.
