The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday said three Indian nationals are missing while 21 crew members were rescued since the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman. Euro News quoted British maritime security company Vanguard Tech saying that the Palau-flagged tanker Settebello had “transmitted a distress call stating that its engine room had been struck by a missile while operating off Sohar in the Gulf of Oman" and that there was a fire onboard.

Sohar is near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. Though it has not yet been clear who was behind the reported missile strike on the ship, Reuters quoted British maritime security group Ambrey saying: “This was likely the result of US operations to blockade Iranian ports". While condemning the attack, the MEA confirmed that three Indian nationals were missing while 21 Indians were rescued. “The continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region are deeply worrisome and a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the region. We reiterate our call for immediate de-escalation of tensions, and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution so that peace and stability can return to the region," the MEA said in a statement.

It added, “The targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end, and free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the international waterways in the region in keeping with international law must be restored at the earliest." According to a report by Euro News, the vessel had reported one casualty.
