Bharosa Centres in Cyberabad have handled 786 cases involving rape and child sexual abuse since March 2022, while facilitating financial assistance of more than ₹70 lakh to victims, officials said during a review meeting on victim support and rehabilitation services. The figures were presented during a convergence meeting convened at the Cyberabad commissionerate on June 9 to assess the functioning of Bharosa and CDEW centres and strengthen support mechanisms for victims of serious crimes. Addressing the meeting, DCP (Women & Child Safety Wing) Srujana Karnam said victims of offences such as rape and child sexual abuse require immediate protection, legal assistance, counselling and rehabilitation to prevent further trauma during the criminal justice process.
She noted that Bharosa Centres were established by Telangana police to provide integrated services under one roof, including legal aid, medical support, psychological counselling and rehabilitation assistance from the registration of an FIR until the conclusion of trial. Officials said that between March 2022 and May 2026, Bharosa Centres in Cyberabad handled 472 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and 314 rape cases. The centres also facilitated 908 victim statements under Section 180 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
To support rehabilitation efforts, ₹70.35 lakh was distributed to 284 beneficiaries through the District Victim Rehabilitation Fund for education, medical treatment and livelihood support. During the meeting, stakeholders recommended measures to improve victim care, including ensuring that victims are not required to remain at police stations late at night and are instead accommodated in shelter homes when necessary. Participants also suggested comprehensive recording of victim statements before judicial proceedings and the allocation of dedicated medical officers at Bharosa Centres to strengthen documentation and support services.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the District Legal Services Authority, Child Welfare Committees, the Health Department, Education Department, Women and Child Welfare Department, public prosecutors and senior police officers.
