(AFP file photo) Nepal on Tuesday moved to reopen files related to the 2001 royal massacre, one of the most traumatic and defining events in the country’s modern history, as reappointed Home Minister Sudan Gurung made the announcement immediately after assuming office for the second time.
The decision marks a fresh attempt to revisit a case that has remained deeply controversial for nearly 25 years, with Gurung saying all previous investigation records would be brought back under review as part of a renewed probe. Gurung had stepped down from the cabinet following allegations of financial irregularities and illegal asset accumulation. However, a government-formed probe committee gave him a clean chit, clearing the way for his reappointment. The night that changed Nepal On June 1, 2001, King Birendra Shah, Queen Aishwarya, Crown Prince Nirajan, Princess Shruti and several other members of the royal family were killed inside the Narayanhiti Palace during a family gathering.
The official investigation at the time concluded that Crown Prince Dipendra carried out the shooting before turning the weapon on himself, reportedly amid family tensions and alcohol consumption. However, over the years, questions have persisted over forensic details, the handling of the crime scene, and the speed of the investigation, keeping public debate alive long after the monarchy itself was abolished.
