Officials from the Hubballi branch office of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) carried out a search and seizure operation against sale of gold jewellery with fake hallmark in Davangere on Tuesday. According to a release issued by the Hubballi branch office of BIS, the search was carried out at Panduranga Bommayya Vernekar Jewellers located on Vijayalakshmi Road in Davangere following credible information about sale of gold jewellery bearing fake hallmark. The search was carried out by an enforcement team constituted by Director and Head P.N. Murali and comprising Joint Directors Mohit Janoiya and Tushar Sharma and Assistant Director Ajay Chakrawarti.
During the raid, over 100 gold ornaments weighing 690.7 grams, including stones and tags in ornaments, bearing fake BIS hallmark on 22 carat and 20 carat gold jewellery, were seized. The seized articles were also found to carry fake mandatory BIS Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) markings in violation of the provisions of the BIS Act 2016 and the BIS (Hallmarking) Regulations 2018, the release said. Appeal The BIS officials have also advised consumers to verify the authenticity of hallmarked gold jewellery through the BIS CARE App before making purchases and to report any suspicious or non-compliant products to Bureau of Indian Standards.
The raid was part of the Bureau’s regular enforcement activities against the misuse of the BIS Standard Mark, including Hallmark and violations of BIS (Hallmarking) Regulations. BIS continues to undertake search and seizure operations based on credible intelligence regarding misuse of the BIS Standard Mark, including Hallmark and hallmarking provisions. These actions are aimed at safeguarding consumer interests, preventing deceptive trade practices and curbing the circulation of substandard and counterfeit products in the market to safeguard consumer interests.
The search and seizure operation underscores the Bureau’s commitment to ensuring compliance with quality and hallmarking standards and protecting consumers from fraudulent practices in the precious metals jewellery sector.
