An investigation into the deaths of five pregnant women at a government hospital in Kota has revealed the use of spurious medication. The state drug laboratory confirmed that the oxytocin administered to the women contained zero active ingredients and was essentially water. The injection, identified as Tosin from a specific batch manufactured in Amritsar, failed to prevent postpartum hemorrhage. Records indicate that a local supplier brought thousands of these vials, distributing them to multiple hospitals in Kota, with a majority already administered to patients before the issue was detected.
The same batch was also sent to New Delhi, Indore, and Gonda. A medical team from Delhi has recommended further testing of anesthesia and fluids used during cesarean deliveries to determine the exact cause of the fatalities. The state health minister acknowledged the irregularity, confirming that the spurious medication was purchased locally and failed to stop excessive bleeding in patients. The incident highlights significant lapses in healthcare quality checks, with several other medicines also failing state quality tests.
