A prominent Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament has resigned from the Trinamool Congress and the upper house. Following the resignation, the politician met the Assam Chief Minister in Delhi, sparking speculation about a potential switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party and a possible candidacy for an upcoming Lok Sabha by-election in Assam. In an exclusive conversation with India Today, the leader cited a focus on development politics in Assam as the primary reason for the departure, praising the infrastructure initiatives in the Barak Valley under the current state government.
The resignation occurs amid an internal crisis within the Trinamool Congress. A rebel faction within the party is currently claiming the support of sixty Members of Legislative Assembly and twenty Members of Parliament. The rebel group is attempting to secure the backing of at least nineteen Lok Sabha Members of Parliament, which constitutes a two-thirds majority of the party's lower house strength, to successfully bypass the anti-defection law.
