Sometimes a small annoyance can become a surprisingly big deal. Last year, pop star Justin Bieber took to Instagram to vent about a design choice in Apple's Messages app, complaining that he kept accidentally tapping the dictation button (microphone symbol) after sending texts on his iPhone. The issue, he said, was frustrating enough to repeatedly pause his music and disrupt his listening experience. Read Full Story Now, with the release of the iOS 27 developer beta, Apple appears to have addressed that very complaint by introducing a new option that allows users to remove the dictation button from the Messages text field entirely.
The complaint that caught Apple's attention Bieber's frustration centred around the placement of the dictation microphone inside the Messages app. According to the singer, the dictation button occupied the same area where users naturally tap after sending a message. As a result, he often found himself accidentally triggering voice dictation immediately after sending a text. In the social media post, Bieber joked that if the button interrupted his music one more time, he would "find everyone at Apple" and put them in a rear-naked choke hold. He also argued that the send button should not have multiple functions in the same location, as it led to accidental taps and a confusing user experience.
His comments quickly resonated with many iPhone users, with some agreeing and venting their frustration about the same issue. The Samsung Nordics account commented on the post, โWe would never do this to you.โ iOS 27 introduces a simple solution With iOS 27, Apple has quietly introduced a new setting that gives users more control over the Messages interface. Inside the Settings app, users can now navigate to Apps, select Messages, and turn off a new option called "Show in Text Field" under the dictation settings. Disabling the option removes the dictation microphone from the message input box, leaving the text field cleaner and reducing the chances of accidental taps.
For users who rarely use voice dictation, the change could make texting a little less frustrating. Apple has not officially linked the new setting to Bieber's criticism. However, the timing has caught the attention of many observers, as the update directly addresses the exact issue he highlighted months ago. Ends
