Indian-Origin Cop Killed After On-Duty Incident In Canada's Ontario, One Person In Custody Published By, Last Updated: June 10, 2026, 11:43 IST An Ontario police officer of Indian origin died after sustaining fatal injuries during an investigation near Hearst, triggering an active probe and tributes. The report mentioned that Constable Tarun Bali, a member of the OPP’s Dufferin Detachment with two and a half years of service, died after being seriously injured while on deployment with the James Bay Detachment. According to the OPP, the incident occurred at around 12.30 pm when officers were conducting an investigation at Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6 near Hearst.
“A member of the OPP was seriously injured and has since been pronounced deceased," the force said in a news release cited by the report. The OPP later identified the fallen officer as Tarun Bali and said one person is currently in custody. In a post on X, OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique confirmed Bali’s death and paid tribute to the officer. “It is with deep sorrow that I confirm that OPP Provincial Constable Tarun Bali was killed in the line of duty this afternoon in Hearst," Carrique wrote. “His courage and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten. As we grieve this immeasurable loss, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, colleagues and the policing community," he added. The news report also mentioned that the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Bali’s death, working alongside the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
According to the broadcaster, Bali’s body is expected to be transferred to the Chief Coroner’s Office on Morton Shulman Way in Toronto for examination. The report mentioned that a procession of emergency vehicles will escort the remains during the approximately 10-hour journey from the Hearst area. Police have appealed for information from the public and asked anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers anonymously. Meanwhile, the death of the Indian-origin officer drew tributes from policing organisations across Canada. The OPP Association described the incident as every police family’s worst nightmare. “This is another reminder of the dangers that our members face each and every day as they serve and protect the citizens of Ontario," OPP Association President David Sabatini said in a statement. The Canadian Police Association also expressed condolences. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues, our OPP Association partners, and all who are grieving this heartbreaking line-of-duty death," association spokesperson Michael Gendron said, according to CTV News.
