‘Man Of Destiny For India’: Venkaiah Naidu Hails PM Modi As He Becomes Longest Serving Elected PM Published By, Last Updated: June 10, 2026, 09:49 IST Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and described him as the "Man of Destiny for India". Modi's rise from tea vendor to longest-serving elected PM is extraordinary, says Venkaiah Naidu. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, crossing the milestone of 4,399 consecutive days in office and surpassing the record set by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu parised his leadership and governance record, saying India has reached “a new level" under his tenure. In an opinion piece published in the Indian Express, the former Vice President describing PM Modi’s life story as extraordinary, and highlighted his humble beginnings in Vadnagar, Gujarat, where he assisted his father as a tea vendor before rising to occupy the country’s highest elected office. “Born to parents of modest means, Modi worked as a tea vendor in Vadnagar, Gujarat, assisting his father. To travel from there to the PM’s office in South Block in the national capital is an extraordinary achievement," he wrote.
Naidu further mentioned that PM Modi’s early association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) helped shape his organisational abilities, clarity of thought and vision for India’s future. “His was a journey of self-realisation, of understanding Bharat, the people and their problems, envisioning the destiny of our country as “Swarnim Bharat" and striving for the realisation of this vision," he said. He also recalled backing his’s candidature for Prime Minister ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, which saw the BJP secure a majority on its own for the first time. The former Vice President argued that Modi’s tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and later as Prime Minister ushered in a new model of governance focused on delivery, accountability and public participation. “At 51, Modi became the youngest Chief Minister of Gujarat without even being an MLA. He demonstrated his abilities from day one, unleashing and channelising the entrepreneurial abilities and energies of the people of Gujarat. His 13-year, unbroken tenure as CM was eventful in several ways," he wrote. Citing flagship initiatives such as Swachh Bharat, Jan Dhan accounts, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Ujjwala LPG connections, Ayushman Bharat and the expansion of digital payments through UPI, Naidu said the government’s policies had transformed the lives of millions.
