The southwest monsoon is continuing its rapid advance across India, and it's expected to do the same today, on June 10, bringing widespread rainfall to numerous regions and setting the stage for further progress into central and eastern parts of the country over the coming days. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon has already covered the entire Northeast, all of Sikkim, and parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. It has also advanced deeper into Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana after making its onset over Kerala on June 4. People walk with umbrellas during rain showers. The southwest monsoon is India's main rainy season, accounting for nearly 70% of the country's annual rainfall and providing crucial water for agriculture, reservoirs and drinking supplies.
Monsoon, with the relentless march, is going to bring showers to a number of regions in the coming days. A satellite image shows the monsoon system covering southern and western India. Kerala and Mahe are expected to receive heavy rain through June 12, while Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to see heavy rainfall until June 11. Telangana is forecast to receive heavy rain today, and so are some isolated coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh, as moisture-laden monsoon winds continue to sweep across the region. While showers are likely across much of the state on June 10, coastal Karnataka is forecast to receive another spell of heavy rain between June 12-14.
North Interior Karnataka may see heavy rainfall on June 12-13, while South Interior Karnataka is expected to receive significant rainfall between June 11-14. Widespread rain is also expected across the northeastern states and parts of eastern India, including Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, which are now fully under the monsoon's influence. These rains are mostly due to a new western disturbance which is expected to cool down temperatures that have been on the rise in recent days.
For farmers preparing for the kharif sowing season, the advancing monsoon is welcome news. The timely spread of rain is expected to support the planting of key crops such as rice, cotton, soybean and pulses across large parts of the country while bringing relief from the intense summer heat that persisted through much of May. Monsoon is on the move, and with the pace it's maintaining, it will spread across the country in no time. Ends
