Bloodshed In PoK: Awami Action Committee Alleges 27 Killed In Pakistan Military Crackdown Reported By, Edited By Last Updated: June 08, 2026, 09:50 IST The JAAC has further claimed that around 110 locals were detained from Rawalkot hospital premises and that several people remain missing following the security action Rapid Read JAAC leaders have also accused authorities of taking custody of the bodies of deceased protesters, although these claims have not been independently verified. Tensions have escalated sharply in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) after local activists and leaders of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) accused Pakistan’s military and security forces of carrying out a violent crackdown during a funeral gathering in Rawalkot, triggering fresh unrest across the region. According to claims made by JAAC leaders, security personnel opened fire and used shelling against mourners and protesters who had assembled outside the Combined Military Hospital in Rawalakot for the funeral prayers of Shahzaib Habib, a protester who was reportedly killed by Pakistan Rangers on Friday.
The gathering was attended by members and leaders of the Awami Action Committee, many of whom were raising slogans against the Pakistan military and demanding accountability for recent actions in the region. The committee has alleged that at least 27 protesters were killed during the operation, while several others sustained injuries. Some locals even claimed that over 100 protesters have been killed by Pakistani security forces. The JAAC has further claimed that around 110 locals were detained from the hospital premises and that several people remain missing following the security action. JAAC leaders have also accused authorities of taking custody of the bodies of deceased protesters, although these claims have not been independently verified. The latest confrontation comes against the backdrop of weeks of growing unrest in PoK, where anti-government demonstrations have increasingly focused on economic grievances, political rights and alleged heavy-handed actions by security agencies.
The situation intensified after violence reportedly broke out during earlier protests, leading to casualties on both sides. According to local activist groups, at least seven members of Pakistan’s security apparatus, including four personnel from the Azad Kashmir Police and three members of the Rangers and Frontier Corps, have died in clashes linked to the ongoing unrest. Authorities have not publicly commented on all of the allegations made by protest leaders. The crackdown has extended beyond street protests. Activists claim that nearly 350 local residents have been detained over the past four days in a series of raids across the occupied region. They also allege that authorities have sealed the central office of the Joint Awami Action Committee and filed what they describe as fabricated criminal cases, including accusations related to illegal possession of ammunition, against several JAAC members. The developments have further heightened tensions in PoK, where the Awami Action Committee has emerged as one of the most prominent voices challenging the administration and security establishment in recent months.
