(Representational) A former Air Canada pilot is facing fraud and forgery charges after Canadian authorities alleged he spent 17 years flying commercial passenger aircraft without holding the licence required to serve as a captain. Geoffrey Wall, 59, of Ontario, is accused of using forged credentials to qualify for the position of pilot-in-command, allowing him to operate hundreds of domestic and international flights and earn millions of dollars in salary despite allegedly lacking the proper certification.
Police said that Geoffrey Wall had worked for Air Canada since 1998 and was to captain in 2009. It was at that point, investigators allege, that he began misrepresenting his qualifications. According to Peel Regional Police, pilots serving as captains on commercial airline flights in Canada must hold an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), the highest level of aircraft pilot certification, which requires candidates to pass a series of examinations and meet specific experience requirements. Authorities alleged that Geoffrey Wall used forged documentation to demonstrate he possessed the licence. Police said Geoffrey Wall flew approximately 900 domestic and international flights during that period, operating several Boeing aircraft types while serving as captain. The alleged fraud came to light last year during a routine evaluation when discrepancies were discovered in Geoffrey Wall’s licensing documents.
The findings prompted an investigation by Transport Canada, the country’s federal transport regulator. After examining the records, Transport Canada referred the matter to Peel Regional Police, who launched a criminal investigation that included executing a search warrant and conducting a forensic analysis of the licence documents. Investigators concluded the credentials had been forged. Geoffrey Wall was charged on June 1 with seven offences, including fraud, forgery and possession of a counterfeit mark. Air Canada said it immediately removed Geoffrey Wall from duty after the discrepancies were discovered and voluntarily reported the matter to Transport Canada. “The company voluntarily reported the matter to Transport Canada," the airline said in a statement. The carrier stressed that passenger safety was never compromised, noting that Geoffrey Wall held a valid commercial pilot licence and successfully completed mandatory competency assessments every six months throughout his employment.
