Real Madrid have stated that Atlético Madrid wanted the €500 million release clause to be activated to sanction the sale of Álvarez. In a statement released on Tuesday, Real Madrid confirmed their desire to sign Álvarez this summer.
The club prepared a €150 million offer to bag his signing, according to reports, but Atlético Madrid were unwilling to sanction a deal for anything below his release clause. “Real Madrid C. F. announces that, following the meeting of the Board of Directors held today, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atlético de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julián Álvarez," the statement read. “After reviewing and evaluating the offer, Club Atlético de Madrid has expressed its gratitude for the proposal, made within the framework of the good relations between both clubs and has rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause," the statement added. The move for Álvarez follows remarks made by Florentino Pérez during his election campaign, in which he pledged to launch a €150 million bid for a Galáctico signing within his first week if elected.
Rumours had suggested that the target could be Michael Olise, João Neves or Vitinha, but the president opted for Álvarez. Meanwhile, Barcelona were also interested in signing him this summer as they seek a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski. A FIFA World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022 and a former Manchester City footballer, Álvarez joined Atlético Madrid in 2024. He is contracted until June 2030 and has a release clause estimated at €500 million. Included in Argentina’s team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Álvarez scored eight goals in La Liga last season and added 10 more in the Champions League, where Atlético Madrid were eliminated in the semi-finals by Arsenal.
