This was the first closed-door meeting between Banerjee and Gandhi after TMC's poll loss in Bengal. (Image: ANI) Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, a day after the INDIA bloc resolved to strengthen coordination among opposition parties and present a united front against the BJP. It is learnt that the meeting was primarily focused on reinforcing opposition unity and discussing ways to support the TMC as it battles a deepening internal crisis following its defeat in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections.
Notably, no discussion on a merger of the TMC with the Congress took place. Congress Assures Support To TMC In the meeting, both leaders agreed that the INDIA bloc must remain united and work more closely, both inside and outside Parliament. Congress is understood to have assured full support to the TMC in Parliament and also offered legal assistance whenever required as the party confronts political and organisational challenges. TMC Rebellion Grows The meeting comes at a time when the TMC is facing one of the biggest rebellions in its history. A majority of the party’s MLAs have formed a separate faction under Ritabrata Banerjee, while a group of Lok Sabha MPs has also moved away from the Mamata Banerjee-led camp and expressed desire to align with the NDA.
The developments have raised concerns about the party’s organisational stability. Sonia Tells Mamata To Fight Back According to sources, the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) encouraged the former Bengal CM to fight back against the crisis, drawing parallels with the Congress’ own difficult phases in the past and recalling how the party had been rebuilt after suffering major setbacks. The meeting marked the first detailed interaction between the two leaders since the TMC’s electoral defeat and underscored the opposition’s effort to prevent further fragmentation within the INDIA bloc.
