Following the completion of scrutiny of nominations for the by-election to the lone vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, the nomination paper of Congress candidate Praveen Chakravarty alone was declared valid.
The TVK had allotted the seat to the Congress, its post-poll ally, which has five MLAs. An official release from the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Secretariat said the nominations of the remaining 12 independent candidates were rejected.
The vacancy arose following the resignation of AIADMK leader C. Ve. Shanmugam from the Upper House after his successful election to the Tamil Nadu Assembly
from Mailam. As only Mr. Chakravarty’s nomination has been accepted, he is expected to be declared elected unopposed.
