M. Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), has ordered a comprehensive fire safety audit of K.R. Market amid concerns over fire hazards at the premises. During an inspection of the market on Tuesday, Mr. Rao directed civic officials to assess fire risks, emergency preparedness measures, and evacuation systems.
He also instructed them to ensure adequate emergency exits are present and install firefighting infrastructure to enable a quick response in the event of a fire. Rao asked officials to identify and remove encroachments in front of shops within the market complex and impose double penalties on violators.
He also directed officials to maintain existing toilets for public use, demolish dilapidated blocks within the premises, and ensure regular cleaning of the market. To address monsoon-related issues, he instructed officials to plug leaks on the market’s glass roofing, improve drainage systems, and clear waterlogging-prone areas on a weekly basis.
Rao further directed officials to prepare a plan for the effective utilisation of the unused third floor of the market building. He also suggested exploring the possibility of establishing revenue and waste management offices on that floor.
