India's Zojila Tunnel project achieved a major engineering milestone with the breakthrough of the final rock barrier inside the main tunnel. Being constructed at an altitude of eleven thousand five hundred feet and spanning over thirteen kilometres, it will become the world's longest bi-directional single tube road tunnel.
The critical breakthrough enables all-weather connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, bypassing a pass that remains cut off during winters. The completed project will ensure year-round access, faster troop movement, stronger logistics, and will boost trade, tourism, and economic opportunities in the strategically sensitive region.
