Massive protests have erupted across Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of at least twenty-seven people and leaving over two hundred injured. The unrest stems from demands for basic rights, including electricity, water, education, and political representation, alongside opposition to the Pakistan Army and ISI's control over the region's legislative assembly. Tensions escalated after authorities banned the Joint Awami Action Committee and launched a sweeping crackdown on its leadership, leading to widespread demonstrations in areas like Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, and Mirpur.
Security forces responded with mass detentions, communication blackouts, and firing on demonstrators. The fallout has reached the United Kingdom, where protests occurred outside Pakistani diplomatic missions and fifty British parliamentarians raised concerns with the UK foreign secretary. Meanwhile, India's Ministry of External Affairs has urged the international community to hold the Pakistan government and military accountable for the ongoing human rights violations and police brutality in the region.
