Leaders from Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea and Trinidad and Tobago were among those who sent messages marking the occasion, with several highlighting India’s growing global profile under Modi’s leadership. Papua New Guinea PM Calls Modi ‘Role Model’ Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape described Modi as “a role model and an example of leadership" in a personal video message. “Lifting over 200 million people out of poverty to good life today is an amazing feat," Marape said, while also expressing Papua New Guinea’s desire to further strengthen bilateral ties with India.
The warm message reflects the close relationship that has developed between the two leaders in recent years. During Modi’s visit to Papua New Guinea in May 2023, Marape had drawn global attention when he greeted the Indian prime minister by touching his feet at Port Moresby airport. The visit, undertaken for the Third Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation Summit, was the first-ever by an Indian prime minister to the Pacific nation. Sri Lanka Praises Modi’s Leadership Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, in a letter addressed to Modi, said the milestone reflected the trust repeatedly placed in him by the people of India. “This milestone is a testament not only to your years in office, but also to the trust and confidence that the people of the world’s largest democracy have repeatedly placed in your leadership," he wrote. Disanayaka also praised India’s economic and social transformation, saying Modi’s vision had inspired people beyond India’s borders, including in Sri Lanka. The message comes against the backdrop of growing ties between the two countries. During Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025, he was conferred the Mitra Vibhushana, the island nation’s highest civilian honour for a foreign dignitary. India had also emerged as a key partner for Sri Lanka during its 2022 economic crisis, extending crucial financial and diplomatic support.
