(Image: PTI/File) The conditions under which retired district judge and Twisha Sharma’s mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, is being held in Bhopal Central Jail have come under fresh scrutiny. During her stay in the jail, allegations surfaced that she and her son, Samarth Singh, received special treatment following their arrest in Twisha’s death case. Amid the controversy, prison authorities transferred a deputy jailer accused of facilitating the alleged privileges, according to a report in The Indian Express.
Jail Superintendent Denies Rule Violation Responding to the allegations, Bhopal Jail Superintendent Rakesh Bhangre denied any rule violations. “There was no preferential treatment given to the inmate. Giribala Singh is housed in a ward that is usually reserved for sick or pregnant inmates, but this is not a medical ward. Since allegations were being raised of VIP treatment, I shifted the concerned jailer. The jail authority was only following the court directions, which stipulated that Giribala be housed in a separate ward," he told the news outlet. The mother-son duo was sent to 14 days of judicial custody after the CBI completed its interrogation and did not seek an extension of their remand. Earlier, Giribala Singh had been accommodated in the women’s medical section, while Samarth Singh was placed in the jail’s medical ward because of a reported leg injury, prompting questions about possible preferential treatment.
Daily Routine Of Giribala Singh Jail officials now maintain that Giribala Singh is following the same routine as other inmates. She reportedly begins her day with morning prayers, attends roll call, and receives meals according to the standard prison schedule. Officials said she was served the same food as other prisoners, including porridge and tea for breakfast. An official said, “Giribala Singh also has canteen facilities available, and eats toast, fruits and namkeen. She has also asked for permission to read newspapers in jail, and this has been granted." Twisha Sharma, an actor and model, married Samarth Singh in December 2025 and died less than six months later. The case was later handed over to the CBI amid allegations of lapses in the initial police investigation.
