(Image: ANI) Nepal has reappointed Sudan Gurung as Home Minister after he was cleared of wrongdoing in a financial investigation, government officials said on Tuesday. Gurung had stepped down in April to ensure a fair probe after allegations surfaced over undisclosed financial investments. Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, re-inducted Gurung into the cabinet following a report by a government-appointed committee that examined the allegations. His media adviser Dipa Dahal confirmed the decision, saying Gurung had been cleared of all charges and was restored to his previous position.
Nepali President Ram Chandra Paudel later administered the oath of office and secrecy at a ceremony in Kathmandu. Gurung, a prominent youth anti-corruption activist, emerged as a key figure during the 2025 youth-led protests that contributed to the fall of the previous government. The protests, initially triggered by a brief social media ban, soon widened into a broader movement against corruption and economic hardship, leaving at least 76 people dead and more than 2,500 injured in two days of unrest. He was appointed Home Minister after winning a parliamentary seat in the March elections under the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which secured a strong mandate. However, he resigned shortly after taking office when questions were raised about his financial disclosures and alleged links to individuals under investigation for money laundering.
Gurung rejected the allegations, describing them as “rumours". Following his return, Gurung is expected to resume oversight of internal security and law enforcement. His earlier tenure drew attention after he ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak over alleged involvement in the crackdown on protesters. Alongside Gurung, independent lawmaker Mahabir Pun was also sworn in as Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation on Tuesday. Pun had previously served in a caretaker government led by Sushila Karki.
