Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president B. Manickam Tagore urged the Congress government in Karnataka to recognise the merit of the petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government in the Supreme Court and immediately come forward to make up the outstanding water deficit at Biligundulu in accordance with the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s order and release the full 3,000 cusecs of water daily.
In a statement, Mr. Tagore said that the livelihood of Tamil Nadu’s Delta farmers should be ensured and that the Samba crops that sustains Cauvery delta farmers should be protected. The Karnataka government has a legal obligation to release without obstruction the rightful share of water to be provided to Tamil Nadu, in accordance with the order issued by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).
Although the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee and the Cauvery Water Management Authority had ordered the release of water at the rate of 3,000 cusecs per day until November 6, the shortfall of 3,851 cusecs at Biligundulu during the initial days has caused considerable fear and concern among Delta farmers, he said.
He urged that all parties must fully respect and act in accordance with the Supreme Court’s judgments and the directions of the Cauvery Water Management Authority.
